Squelch Colic Cries
The signs are obvious. The baby cries, pulls his knees up to his abdomen, and appears to be in great pain. He may become gassy, then become quiet, then begin crying again. No matter how many times you swaddle, feed, change or sooth him, it doesn’t stop the painful crying that lasts for hours on end. Colic tends to be most severe at four to six weeks of age and gradually subsides by three to four months.
Colic Cures
Here are some natural colic cures to try.
Lay the baby down on a bed (on his back). As he lies flat, take both of his feet in the palms of your hand while gently pushing his knees toward his belly. This helps relieve excess gas that may have built up in his tummy.
You can also try burping the baby more than you normally would after a feeding. Colicky babies are harder to burp than non-colicky babies. When bottle-feeding, burp after every ounce, and try a variety of nipple types.
Swaddling a baby also helps sometimes. Try wrapping the baby snugly in a blanket. This has a calming effect and is popular in some cultures. This has been known to help in colic attacks. Other known cures include putting the baby in his carrier and placing it on the washing machine. The motion of the washer shakes the carrier gently and helps calm the baby.
Another thing you can try is to vacuum near the baby. It’s the sound of the vacuuming that distracts the baby. This works in a lot of cases and is easy to do. You probably need to vacuum right now.
Try these methods if you are struggling with a colicky baby. Most have brought some relief to suffering parents everywhere. Try to remember that colic doesn’t last long. It just feels like forever while you are going through it.
